Lacrosse Dominates Drexel on Senior Day
On a day when Williamson honored its nine seniors and their families, the Williamson lacrosse team made sure everyone left happy, as they dominated play early on and coasted to a 10-4 win over Drexel University on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the start of the game, Williamson Director of Athletics Dale Plummer read a special tribute to the nine seniors and their families. Those honored included:
#2 Cooper Conroy Mother Tara
#7 Matt Dickinson Parents Dan and Tina Dickinson
#9 Sean Lohr Parents Dave and Christine Lohr
Sister Carly and brother Nate
#14 Nick Burdumy Parents Rob and Anna Burdumy
# 18 David Pownall Jr Father David Pownall Sr and brother
Daulton Pownall
#22 Jack Welsh Mother Heather and brother Dylan
#25 C.J. McCue Parents Butch and Randi McCue
#26 Nick DelVecchio Parents Mark and Deborah DelVecchio
and sister Gianna
#31 Gavin Biddle Parents Robert and Stacy Biddle
Once the game started, it was all Williamson, as the raced out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Rob Wagner and Seamus Bohannon each tallied two goals in the period, with Hayden McGinnis and Gavin Biddle picking up assists.
Williamson would then tack on two more goals in the second quarter to increase their lead to 6-0 at half. McGinnis scored on an incredible effort, and Bohannon added the hat trick goal off a feed from Wagner.
Any thoughts Drexel had of getting back into the contest were quickly dashed, as Williamson tacked on four more goals in the third quarter. Rob Wagner added his third goal off a feed from Cooper Conroy and Hayden McGinnis added his second, with the assist going to Seamus Bohannon. Anthony Zollo added an unassisted goal and Matt Dickinson added an over the shoulder tally to push the lead to 10-0 heading into the fourth. From there the Mechanics were able to give several players some much needed game experience, as the Dragon responded with four goals in the final stanza.
Jack Welsh had five save in net for Williamson, while CJ McCue added two.
The win increases Williamson's winning streak to four and has them at 8-3 on the year. It also clinches an NCLL Liberty division play-off berth for Williamson for the third straight year. When and where they play is still to be determined. A win over TCNJ would give them a first-round home play-off game.
"I'm very proud of this group of seniors," shared 11th year head coach and legionary Hall of Fame coach Jim DeRose. "They have accomplished a lot over their three years, but they know there is still more do get.
"We are starting to gel as a team and their focus is on the bigger prize. A lot of that has to do with our seniors and we are thankful for each of them."
