It wasn't pretty but the Williamson lacrosse team was able to do what needed to be done to come away with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over the visiting Vikings of Mercer County College on Wednesday night.
It didn't start out well for Williamson, as they fell behind 3-0 early and trailed 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. Both first quarter goals were scored by Seamus Bohannon, one off an assist by Matt Dickinson.
The early onslaught by Mercer served as a wake-up call for the Mechanics, as they dominated the second quarter, shutting out the Vikings while scoring five goals of their own to take a 7-5 halftime lead. Five different Mechanic players scored in the quarter. Seamus Bohannon scored his 3rd goal, followed by Matt Dickinson (assist to Rob Wagner), Anthony Zollo, Cooper Conroy and Hayden McGinnis.
Mercer though was far from done, as they scored quickly in the third quarter to pull to within 7-6. Rob Wagner would make it 8-6, off a nice feed from Hayden McGinnis but Mercer would answer right back to pull to within one at 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mercer then would tie it at 8-8 under a minute into the fourth, before goals by Anthony Zollo, (assisted by Hayden McGinnis), a nifty goal by Matt Dickinson and a Chase Staley goal (Rob Wagner assist) would give Williamson a 3-goal lead with 6:20 left. Once again though Mercer would come right back, as they scored at the 2:04 mark to make it 11-9 before Seamus Bohannon's fourth goal made it 12-9 less than a minute later. Mercer would answer yet again at the :53 second mark but that would end the scoring on the night.
While he didn't score any goals, the face-off play by senior Nick Burdumy was outstanding and really set the tone for the Mechancis during the second period when Williamson turned things up. Every time the tema needed to get a key face-off, he got it nd his play was crucial in the win.
"It wasn't pretty and there are a lot of things we have to work on but good teams win when they are not at their best. We clearly were not at or best tonight, but I'm pleased we did what we needed to do to win against a very good team in Mercer," shared Williamson head coach Jim DeRose.
The win stretches Williamson's winning streak to three, as they move to 3-1 on the year. They next host St. Joseph's University Saturday afternoon in a noon start.
