Lacrosse Drops Opener to #2 West Chester

There is a reason that every year West Chester University proves to be at the top of the National Collegiate Lacrosse League rankings.  While they did not win the NCLL Division II national championship last year, they have won the title six pervious times.

Williamson's lacrosse program itself has been building into one of the finer programs in the nation as well over the past few years. Last season, Williamson won their first 11 games, including an upset of West Chester to start the season, and made it as high as #2 in the national rankings in 2024.

With West Chester ranked #2 in the pre-season, and Williamson ranked #4, Mechanic fans were hoping to pull off another upset to start this season.  Unfortunately for Williamson fans, that was not to be the case, as West Chester proved to be too strong on the way to a 13-6 triumph.

Things started out well for Williamson, as they grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Chase Staley, who scored his first collegiate goal in his first collegiate game.  Sadly for Williamson, that would be their only lead of the day.  West Chester then reeled off 5 consecutive goals and eventually took a 6-2 lead into half.

Williamson scored first in the third quarter on a goal by Cooper Conroy but the Golden Rams answered right back with two quick goals to go up 8-3.  They then scored three additional goals to put the game out of reach at 11-3 before closing out the win with a convincing 13-6 victory.

"It is once game and we now know what we have to work on.  Obviously, West Chester is a great team. Hats off the them. While we have a lot to work on, we also did some things well.  We will get back at it and continue to improve," shared Williamson head coach Jim DeRose.

Cooper Conroy led Williamson with two goals.

Williamson gets back at it on Wednesday in a 6:00 P.M. start at Delaware Tech.
