Huge Road Win for Mechanics
In the continuing trend of what a difference a year makes, the Williamson lacrosse team nailed that point, as they won a big road contest over host Del Tech by a score of 7-5 on Wednesday night. For those who remember last year's contest, Del Tech blasted host Williamson by a score of 20-7.
Despite being a heavy road underdog, it was Williamson who started strong and grabbed an early 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. Their defense then stood-up the host in the second period, blanking them through the second frame to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.
As expected, the hosts came roaring back in the third frame, outscoring Williamson 3-1 to knot things up at 5-5 heading into the final frame. A year ago, Williamson would have been in trouble in such a situation however, this year's team has proven that despite, their youth, they are up for any challenge.
A big part of the positive change for Williamson this year has been the outstanding play they have received from freshmen goalies Jack Welsh (FR/Broomall, PA) and Charles McCue (FR/Collegeville, PA). Last night is was Welsh's turn to step up, and did he ever, as he blanked the hosts in the final frame, while Williamson added two fourth period goals to come away with the stunning 7-5 win.
"Our guys gutted it out. I'm proud of the fact that when Del Tech made a run, our guys stepped things up. They didn't back down at all and showed tremendous heart, shared head coach Jim DeRose. "We could have easily folded but this team has tremendous heart and you saw that tonight. And we will only get better from here."
Williamson was led by freshman Sean Lohr (FR/Springfield, PA) and junior Konnor Oreskovich (JR/Glenolden, PA) with two goals each, while Cooper Conroy (FR/Broomall, PA), Shane Titus (SR/Springfield, PA) and Luke Van Auken (SR/Haddon Heights, NJ) each added one apiece. Welsh had a monster game in net, turning aside 22 shots.
Williamson get right back into action at home on Saturday, as they host Drexel University in a 10:45 A.M. start.
