Wrestling Takes Second at MEC Championships
BALTIMORE - The Williamson College of the Trades wrestling team shone on the conference stage with six student-athletes taking home medals as the Mechanics tied for second at the MEC Championships.
The Mechanics were also recognized for having the top team GPA.
Below is a rundown of the performances for everyone from Williamson
Ryan Sullivan – Entering the conference tournament, Sullivan had determination in eyes and heart. It was on full display as the 7 th seed powered his way fighting every step of the way securing two falls on his way to a spot on the podium with a 5 th place finish. His work ethic all season culminated with an impressive place finish.
Harry Asencio – After losing to Rowan on Senior Recognition Night, Asencio was determined to not let that happened again. During the second period in his semi final match, Asencio took his opponent to his back and secured the fall. In the finals he lost to the number one seed, however, Asencio advances to the NCWA National Tournament for the third consecutive year.
Alex Gamble Williams – Alex dominated the 174 pound weight class with two tech falls (a win by 15 points or more), and a major decision. Gamble Williams, an All American his freshman year returns to Shreveport with the intentions of returning to All American status. As Coach Frank commented at the end of the tournament, "Alex is dialed in."
Liam Kernan – A two time National Qualifier punched his ticket to Shreveport with a major decision in his last match at conferences. Kernan's record of 16-4 shows how dominant he has been this year. A leader both on and off the mat, Kernan is one of two Williamson wrestlers who have attained the status of three time National Qualifier.
Nurrideen Ahmad Statts continued his undefeated season taking his record to 22-0. Statts a 2025 National Championship runner up is looking for some redemption as he heads to Shreveport. His commanding performance at the MEC Conference Championship included 2 falls, a major decision and a decision.
Joe Coney came into the MEC Conference Championship as a 7 th seed and walk out with a 4th place and a trip to Nationals. Most wrestlers in the 174 pound weight class feared Alex Gamble Williams. However the Mechanics had a one two punch with Coney and Williams. Coney's only losses were to the same wrestler; in the first round and then the consolation finals. Coney' record on the day was 3-2 with two technical falls and a pin.
